The mission of the C+M Center is to leverage data science to drive social change and equity.

The goals of the C+M Center are to

  • Advance bold data science research to drive systemic social change.
  • Equip future leaders with critical skills to champion social equity.
  • Forge impactful partnerships to deliver transformative data solutions.
The Constance and Marin Silver Center on Data Science and Social Equity (C+M Center) supports scholarship and the early development of innovations in data science for social equity impact, including studies that harness big data and use artificial intelligence. In order to leverage the growing availability and complexity of such data, the C+M Silver Center helps develop and nurture the scientific skill set of NYU Silver faculty, students, and affiliates. The C+M Center aligns with the Grand Challenges for Social Work to Harness Technology for Social Good.

The C+M Center was established in June 2021 as part of a visionary $16 milion gift from Dr. Constance and Martin Silver to NYU Silver to harness the emerging power of big data to identify the root causes of society’s most pressing challenges and achieve broad and transformational social impact. In addition to funding the C+M Center, that gift included $5 million for the NYU McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy to establish an Artificial Intelligence Hub, and funded the establishment of an Endowed Professorship in Data Science and Prevention at NYU Silver, which is held by Dr. Ruopeng An.

The C+M Center is pleased to offer consultation services to NYU Silver faculty. These sessions are designed as a supportive space to explore questions about data science research design and methods (such as natural language processing, machine learning, and large language models), as well as project management topics (including accessing big data, data sharing, and IRB considerations).

Our goal is to make these conversations approachable and useful—most questions can be addressed in about 30 minutes, with the option to schedule additional time if needed. To sign up for a consultation, please fill out this brief intake form.
